Vitamin D is good for bone health in babies and children as calcium can only be absorbed properly with the help of vitamin D. Nearly all vitamin D gets into the body through the skin, only a very small amount is absorbed through food. Use SPF 15 sunscreen or above and the skin will not produce any vitamin D. In Germany babies get prescribed vitamin D tablets or drops from birth when breastfed. Milk already contains some vitamin D. We personally only use vitamin D drops throughout the winter month, in summer we try to be outside as much as possible and soak up the real stuff.
